automotive industry is going through some dramatic changes.
Here, in North America giants like Ford and General Motors
are dramatically reorganizing to be competitive in the
global market. This was further verified by the recent
restructuring plan that Ford presented to its global audience.
If we look at the automotive industry for the past five
years, it is quite apparent that major manufacturers like
GM, Ford, Renault/Nissan, and Daimler Chrysler have gone
through or are undergoing major restructuring. This is
necessary to compete and survive in the global arena. Same
can be said about suppliers. Suppliers at all levels are
facing tremendous cost pressure, increase energy cost,
and increase competition from global players. This is not
going to change anytime soon.
A lot of attention at present is being
given to countries like China and India and their present
and future capabilities in the auto industry. There is
no doubt that regions like South and Central Asia, South
America, Eastern and Central Europe, and Africa present
enormous opportunities as well as challenges for the auto
industry. The innovation and drive though will still come
from North America. This is still very true for North America
is still the largest market for the industry as a whole.
This fact is verified by how well new domestics such as
Toyota, Honda and Hyundai are doing in this market.
The Global Automotive Conference (GAC)
was created in 2000 to analyze and benchmark new ideas
that will affect this industry. The GAC is the most important
conference in the South in 2007. Now in its eighth year,
the GAC brings together executives, senior and middle management
of automotive assemblers, suppliers, and service providers
to discuss issues and action plans with government participants
and educators from advanced learning institutions.
